iPhone at Macworld

Lord forgive me for COVETING! This DOES look very cool. Details every 60 seconds here. Wifi, internet, organizer. Have to admit . . . its pretty cool. But only 5 hours battery life and 16 hours for audio. Thats not much.
$499 (4 Gig) and $599 (8 Gig) OUCH. Dang thats a LOT of money for a phone. Europeans will have to wait till the last quarter of 2007. Americans can get it in June.
Update: Apple just updated their site with this GORGEOUS image . . .

One major problem. It's not 3G! Why!?!?!?!? EDGE is Cingular's older and slower data network, they've launched 3G in many areas and is 3X faster than EDGE.

I'm blown away by the device and especially the multi-touch interface. But the pricing and the Cingular exclusivity really dampen my enthusiasm for it. And what about Leopard? And iLife 07? And .mac?

I have less respect for Apple, Inc than i had for Apple Computer. The 2000 Macworld i attended was about productivity and iMovie demonstrations and now its all about buying cool consumer products.

Let's face it...the iPhone is extraordinary...
But, I'm not sure I can get over people's disappointment: 'no 3G', 'no iLife' etc etc
Can we not see that Apple has produced what is surely the most advanced communications device in ages.
I won't be too surprised, if - when Steve Jobs makes his CEO speech in the autumn, there will be loads of advances and new innovations already.

and also more giggage. 4 and 8 are not much at all. especially for the high price. you cant tell people that they can take their itunes with them if you only give them 8Gig max.

I was suprised there was no SIP/VoIP setup, so that when connected to a wifi mesh, you could make calls over that and not pay your local phone provider for minutes.
I guess we will have to wait for 3rd party apps or the Nokia 770 for that.

I am lusting as well, Andrew. No worries.
According to a CNN.com survey, only 35% say they will buy an iPhone right away, while 45% say they will wait until the price came down. But I'm not sure the price will come down ... it didn't (by any measurable degree) in iPod's case. People will basically pay whatever "Apple, Inc." says they will pay.
Eventually, I'll probably be one of those people. :)

nate -- it sounded like it switched over once it found a wifi signal. i wonder if you could fix it to just run on wifi under a cloud - and get free calls that way?

TO get a bit techie, the major problem with free wireless calls is the same one cell phones had initially: how to transfer the call from one wifi station to another (or one cell to another) without a break in the call... Apparently this is some way off, so for now you'd have to stay put per call if you did the wifi thing...

And what if I am stuck under contract with a carrier OTHER
than Cingular but still want a iPhone?
