Nintendo Wii: Remote Control for Ableton

DJVicar brings up the possibility of using Nintento's Wii remote and Ableton Live for a worship setting and links to a post that discusses it. There is also a video demonstration. Very cool. I saw a VJ use Arkaos and Ableton Live at the same time, but he still had to use his MIDI to run it all. Remote control would rock!.

CloudbursttimDJ Cloudburst [Hi Tim!!] used a Gameboy at one of our worship events in Prague (2002). Once I bought Salling Clicker so I could trigger Powerpoint or Keynote slides from my bluetooth phone. But I never really used Powerpoint [yes, i know, the devil uses powerpoint] prefering to use Arkaos for teaching and presentation instead. I wonder: Is there a way to use Nintendo Wii to trigger videos in Arkaos or a similar VJ program? Anyone know?

Video Jockeys in the Church

Wl Logo 2-1I have an article in the Culture Watch section of the most recent Worship Leader Magazine called "The Church VJ". It covers the role of the video jockey in church worship, as well as a little history on how the church has been pioneering the art of throwing pictures on a wall since Jesuit missionaries and David Livingstone were using the Magic Lantern to show the gospel many years ago.

Legionscr 1The VJ is still a shadowy figure in church circles and a way under-appreciated artist in the wider scene. But their time will come. In the article I give some practical advice on toning it down, finding alternative places to project, and what kind of video to use. In case you were wondering, I been using Arkaos VJ 3.5.1 for the past 3 years, after a much needed upgrade from G-Force.

MidAir Keyboards for VJ's

 Images Content 2006 06 02 Midair

VJ's, digital storytellers and multi-media preachers take note. A new wireless MIDI keyboard called MidAir comes out soon from M-Audio. I have used the previous model - the Oxy8 - to trip my video loops for about 3 years and will be sticking with it, despite having to plug in directly to my computer.

The Time We Blew Up Criswell's Speaker

I just found one of my tiny movies i made for dial up internet 5 years ago. Its from 2001 when we did a multimedia worship event at the amphitheater in Waco Texas. It was a part of the Baptist General Convention of Texas annual meeting. I'm uploading it again here. Its only 340 k - about the size of a large photo. But back in the pre-broadband era, back in the DAY, even that size took a bit of patience.

The VJ is Bryce Wagner of Fuse Factory - who btw - has just had a bout of kidney trouble and could use your prayers and the DJ is also from Fuse Factory. I have more video footage of poet Mark Scandrette who stepped on stage to read out his "prophetic poetry" over Texas, backed up with live visuals (3 projectors) and the DJ. Pretty cool. I should really dig up the footage and make a larger movie.

Dr Criswell's Church, First Baptist Church of Dallas, was kind enough to let us use their sound system. But I warned them about the DJ from Switzerland and his preference for loud, deep, bass. I am not sure if they followed me on that. Anyway. Apologies to the late Dr Criswell, again, for the damage to one of the speakers - ohhhh . . . did u think i meant one of his "preachers"???? i'mmm soorrrrrrry!. And thanks to the Criswell Theological Review for highlighting the Emerging Church in their latest issue.

The event was not well attended but it was dynamic - impromtu, spontaneous, spiritual, vibrant and we felt it was the beginning of something. The poetry was not even planned. Nor was Derek Chapman getting up to pray over the youth - it just happened - but the synergy between the words, moving images and sounds was something i dont think any of us had ever really witnessed before. This was the starting point for Fuse Factory who until that night were called 'Jimini'.

They just released a new chill-out DVD called Progressive Ambient Experience 1 (check out the preview).
